Review of Gregg Rolie Quartet at One World Theater
Here's an excerpt from the review...
“What if Jimmy Reed wrote ‘Evil Ways’ instead of Willie Bobo?,” he wondered.
He and the band answered that rhetorical question by running through a slinky version of the tune, with six-string master Haynes taking welcome liberties with his guitar.
“You can tell this is a serious gig,” Rolie quipped at one point...

Gregg Rolie Quartet at One World Theater in Austin, TX
For Immediate Release
Santana / Journey Legend Gregg Rolie And His Quartet To Play One World Theatre In Austin, TX –
January 23, 2013
Austin, TX - Gregg Rolie, co-founder of two multi-platinum super groups, Santana and Journey, will be performing with his quartet at the One World Theatre in Austin, TX on January 23, 2013. Gregg Rolie's performance at the One World Theatre comes on the heels of his recent tour with Ringo Starr's All Star Band. The Gregg Rolie Quartet will be playing selections from Santana and Journey along with songs from his solo career, as well as a couple unreleased new numbers. Gregg will also answer questions from the audience during the show. After the performance, there will be a meet and greet with the audience and Gregg and the band will be on hand for pictures and autographs.
Says Gregg, “The Gregg Rolie Quartet is an extension of the duo with Gregg Rolie and Texas blues guitarist Alan Haynes. We added my longtime friend and drummer from the Gregg Rolie Band, Ron Wikso, and the bass player is Sticky Lopez out of Austin, TX.”
Gregg Rolie is the voice behind the classic Santana hits "Black Magic Woman" "Evil Ways" and "Oye Como Va". In 1998, this world class musician, writer, producer was inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall Of Fame as the unmistakable lead vocalist of the Santana band. In addition to launching- along with Carlos Santana- the now legendary act, Rolie also co-produced their first four groundbreaking albums. Departing Santana after the pioneering jazz fusion offering 'Caravansarai' in 1972, band members Gregg Rolie and Neal Schon went on to form the 1980's hit-makers Journey, co-writing and producing that band's first 7 albums.
Released in 2011, 'Five Days' is Gregg Rolie's's latest EP/CD consisting of 6 songs featuring Gregg playing acoustic piano and singing live. He recorded these tracks in his living room on the piano given to him by his father in the early days of Santana, and as Gregg says, "It's from my house to yours." He gives beautiful new renditions of 2 classic hits that he sang as the lead singer in Santana - "Black Magic Woman" and Journey - "Anytime" - as well as 4 new songs, his own compositions through solo voice and piano. Also now available, Gregg Rolie, featuring blues guitarist Alan Haynes, Live At The Iridium CD, recorded last year and available through his website, the Iridium Club NYC, and at the One World Theatre the night of the show. Much to the excitement of Gregg Rolie's fans 'down under', Gregg will be touring Australia with Ringo Starr's All Star Band in February 2013!
Gregg Rolie & Alan Haynes - Live at The iridium CD
Taken from one of Gregg and Alan's duo performances at the esteemed Iridium Club in New York City, this Live CD captures the essence of the duo in action, in an intimate setting. Gregg brings stories of the glory days of Santana, the early days of Journey, and great new arrangements of classics like "LOOK INTO THE FUTURE", "EVIL WAYS," "ANYTIME" and "BLACK MAGIC WOMAN." Also brilliant new material from his recent solo project, including the touching "IF I WENT HOME," a song 30 years in the making about his falling out with the band Journey. Armed with a Steinway grand, and Texas Strat-slinger Alan Haynes, Gregg Rolie transforms his stadium rockers into an exciting and personal night club show.
Here's a review from Rockchicago.net, of the show in Hammond, IN, with Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band. The review is by Peter Sakas and there are also lots of great photos! Suddenly there was the familiar Evil Ways (which was released as a single in 1969, from Santana’s first album) and the crowd went wild. The whole crowd was singing along, dancing, gyrating to the hypnotic Latin beat, people once again spilling into the aisles dancing. My wife was looking around amazed at the audience response and exclaimed, “This is great!” Gregg Rolie has always been overlooked in Santana, but he was the singer on their big hits in the early days of the band and his distinctive Hammond organ really helped drive the band. He was in great voice, played outstanding keyboards, and gave an enthusiastic performance. I was a bit worried about the guitar in this song because of the legendary Carlos Santana, but Steve Lukather proved to be a masterful guitarist and his playing complimented the song perfectly.Click here to read this blog review

Blog Review from The Greek Theater in LA
This is a blog review, complete with lots of photos and video, from the Los Angeles show at the Greek Theater, with Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band. Here's an excerpt: Two great additions are Steve Lukather (guitar, vocals) and Gregg Rolie on keyboards and vocals . Steve is a monster on the guitar and I honestly had no idea Gregg Rolie was still around, but cool - he was in the original Journey and Santana! “Africa”, “Hold the Line”, “Everybody’s Everything” (Santana) and “Black Magic Woman” are easily 4 of the best songs in the set. Review from Ruth Eckerd Hall on the Ringo Starr Tour
An excerpt from the review on the Examiner.com site: "For the first time ever on the tour Gregg Rolie was an All-Star, and well-deserved. The first of many thunderous ovations for the evening came after Rolie’s spectacular performance of the Santana classic, “Evil Ways.” (#9 Billboard Hit in 1969) Gregg Rolie has been overshadowed through the years by virtuoso guitarist Carlos Santana, but it was Gregg Rolie’s majestic vocals and magnificent keyboards that solidified the masterpiece of Santana. Rolie was the voice on almost every classic Santana hit. Rolie was also the founder and original vocalist for the band Journey. Click here to read the whole review

Review from Bethel Woods - The Original Woodstock Site
The second stop on the Ringo Starr tour saw the band visiting the Bethel Woods Performing Arts Center, which is situated on the hallowed grounds where the original Woodstock festival took place, in 1969. Gregg Rolie, as you may know, performed at the original Woodstock festival as a founding member of Santana. Upon performing "Evil Ways" with Ringo's band, Gregg told the audience, "the last time I was here, we played this song with Santana 43 years ago!". Gregg is the only member of the All Starr Band to have performed at Woodstock. Here's an excerpt from one of the reviews from the show: "He then took his familiar spot behind the other set of drums and turned the stage over to his All Starr Band. They did NOT disappoint. It was an evening of mega-hits with the other stars taking turns. Rundgren’s “Hello It’s Me” followed by Rolie recreating a song he played 43 years earlier on these same hallowed grounds – Santana’s “Evil Ways.” ..."Click here to read the whole review

Long overdue!
